Review Summary

I had almost forgotten this flick when I ran across it in the discount rack at my local video store, but just seeing the cover got me excited. I picked it up and ran home like a nymphomaniac with a hot date, and man was it worth it.

The Review

I love the 80’s! Movies were fun as well as violent, people were out of their minds, and cars kicked ass, hell some of them even talked! The 80’s brought us killer films like: Night of The Demons, Return of The Living Dead, and Night of The Comet. That’s right, Thom Eberhardt’s apocalyptic zombie flick. I had almost forgotten this flick when I ran across it in the discount rack at my local video store, but just seeing the cover got me excited. I picked it up and ran home like a nymphomaniac with a hot date, and man was it worth it.

The minute the film started and the cheesy narrator started rattling off about Earth’s impending doom a smile was tattooed on my face for the next 95 minutes. A comet is going to pass by Earth and nearly everyone on the planet is outside with eyes looking into the sky hoping to get a glimpse of it. During it’s passing anyone that was outside was vaporized leaving only a pile of red dust and clothes behind. Those that lived were turned into zombie-like comet creeps, but anyone that was inside a steel structure survived without being turned into said comet creeps. And it just so happens that two of the survivors happen to be hot girls. Regina (Catherine Mary Stewart) and her sister Samantha (Kelli Maroney) made it out alive and are held up in a radio station trying to make contact with other survivors. When they do make contact its with a group of scientist freaks that are harvesting survivors to use them as a cure for the comet creeps.

I am a huge fan of The Last Starfighter and have a huge crush on Catherine Mary Stewart so the fact that she is in this flick kicking creep ass made me a very happy man. I wish we could have gotten a little skin but she’s nice to look even with her clothes on. The music in this flick is awesome! It’s nostalgia at its finest complete with big guitars and analog synthesizers.

The filmmakers did wonderful job of creating a wasteland of empty streets filled with red dust, and even though the film is dated it still holds up. After seeing the girls on the empty streets it made me realize that films like 28 Days Later definitely took some of their ideas from this film. When the credits rolled I found myself wanting more and that is always a good sign. I think I’m going to try and get my hands on director Thom Eberhardt’s flick Sole Survivor because I remember really enjoying it back in 1983. Check out Night of The Comet it’s a lot of fun and doesn’t take itself to seriously.
