Sometimes scary, sometimes unintentionally funny "Dangerous Worry Dolls" is fun if you're willing to take the journey.
The Review
I’ll be honest; I didn’t really expect much from this movie. However, once I watched it, I realized it’s not half bad. Sure it has some typical B-movie clichés but the concept was interesting enough for me to overlook them. I had never heard of worry dolls but apparently they spring from Guatemalan folklore so that definitely piqued my interest. But, anyway, onto the review:
The story of “Dangerous Worry Dolls” centers around a girl named Eva who is sent to a women detention center for her crimes instead of jail. Right off the bat she’s bullied by the head bitch in charge, the appropriately named Killa Kim, she gets in a scuffle and quickly broken up by the guard, Carl. After a tongue lashing by the head of the center, Ms. Ivar, she’s sent away. After Carl tries his cheesiest lines, she’s goes back to her bed. She then talks with Mouse; the actress does a good imitation of Willow from “Buffy." Mouse tells Eva to let them do what they want, then Eva gets a visit from her daughter who gives her some worry dolls. That night, Eva is brutally raped by Carl so she puts the worry dolls under her pillow and, this is the fucked up part, one of the worry dolls crawls up inside head via her ear. WEIRD!!! The next morning, Eva is feeling great however she notices a red spot on her forehead. Throughout the rest of the film, Eva’s behavior takes a complete 180. I’ll try not to spoil it but there’s a scene with Carl later that had me shocked and laughing my ass off at the same time.
Outside of Eva, the other characters lack any real development. Most of them are over-drawn stereotypes that get really old. Thankfully, their scenes are sparing, so it doesn’t become too much to handle. Another thing that really got my goat was the fact that only one worry doll was used. It would’ve been interesting to see if the other worry dolls executed things differently or have more variety. I actually expected this movie to be more gory than it was, the real gory stuff doesn’t happen until the last 20 minutes.
The main thing that found hilarious was the fact that as Eva’s “zit” on her forehead gets bigger, hardly anybody notices or says anything about it. Seriously I think they brought attention to it like 3 times.
