The Review
I went to the kitchen today to make one of my favorite things: A black angus roast beef sandwich with colby jack cheese on honey wheat bread all fresh from the local deli. One of the many things on my to-do list today was to pick up the house while the wife and kid were out, which I fully intended on doing directly after I ate my delicious lunch. I sat down on the couch and flipped on the boob tube and saw a movie called DERAILED starting up. I thought about changing it over to G4 to watch something that would keep my mind occupied while I devoured this three bread stack of wonderful.
Reading the synopsis for the movie, I was intrigued. Mainly by the guides use of 'Hitchcocian style thriller'. Also starring the dreamy Clive Owen and that one girl Jennifer Aniston, I started watching it.
The look of the movie was pretty great, utilizing great colors you don't usually see in mainstream thriller garbage, that was the second thing that grabbed me. I sat there eating my sandwhich, engulfed in it. Clive and Jennifer start the movie off meeting each other, and flirting with the idea of cheating on their respective spouses. So much so, that they finally get into a seedy motel to break their vows. It was at this point that I was starting to wonder where the movie was going, but at the same time I wasn't getting bored with it.
Suddenly, BLAMMO! Owen gets beat on by an intruder right as Aniston was about to take down his work slacks. He falls down on the floor, face bloodied and somewhat out of it, as the attacker has his way in a quite shocking rape scene.
Since they shouldn't have been there at all, Aniston talks Owen into not filing a police report, and they part ways.
From this point the movie is mostly the attacker contacting Owen and mentally torturing him and getting large amounts of cash so he won't tell his family. I'll leave the rest to you, if you choose to check it, as it has a pretty kickass third act. Like I said, it's predicable, but it's pretty damn sweet as well. Had Clive Owen not had the role, I highly doubt this film would have the strong finale that it does.
I caught this one on cable, so I have no clue what kinds of extras the dvd holds. It would be worth a purchase, though, even if it were a bare bones.
Oh, and by the time it was over my wife was home and none too happy that I spent my time watching the movie in lieu of cleaning. Of course, when I told her what I'd watched she said 'Oh, that's an intense movie." and she said it with, what I'd like to think was, a forgiving tone.
