The Review

Detective shows are a dime a dozen, but well done detective shows are becoming scarce. The USA networks fake detective comedy Psych is one of those shows that combines charm, charisma, solid writing, and laugh out loud physical comedy to bring one of the best detective shows since Moonlighting into the living-rooms of couch huggers across the globe.

Psych follows the exploits of Shawn Spencer (James Roday), who after using his special skill to call in a tip and almost landing himself in jail for having to much information, convinces the police that he has clairvoyant abilities, and in turn is recruited as the department’s psychic. Growing up in a family of cops and under the roof of his strict father, Henry (Corbin Bernsen) who forced him to develop his photographic memory, Shawn can pick out bits of information that even the best cops miss. Once Shawn realizes that he can use his gift to earn a living he enlists the help of his skeptical and reluctant best friend Gus (Dulé Hill) to help him solve the mysteries that the police throw at him.

The quick-witted dialogue and quirky mysteries create a great atmosphere that pulls the viewer into the duo’s hilarious misadventures. Another plus this show has going for it is the strong chemistry between Shawn and officer Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), who can’t stand him. The two actors are a perfect fit and create a strong dynamic relationship that most television shows today don’t seem to have.

The Pilot is a strong opening that sets up the rest of the shows 40-minute episodes. A highlight was episode 2 Spellingg Bee which has Shawn and Gus investigating the murder of the spell-master at a regional spelling bee. But with that said, every episode on this disc is quality television.

The sound and color is top notch and each disc is packed with special features. We get James Roday’s audition tape, audio commentary, a feature about the writers of the show, which was really cool, deleted scenes, a blooper reel and more. Psych is a breath of fresh air and one of the best times I’ve had watching television in a long time. So check it out because Psych is a killer series.
