Review Summary

This documentary has it all: a villain you'll love to hate, a hero you'll pull for, and a wide array of supporting characters that will have you wondering : what the hell is wrong with these people? "The King Of Kong" is the most fun you can have watching someone else play video games.

The Review

I have a confession to make. It's something that a lot of people from my generation just wouldn't understand, seeing as how its been all the craze since the introduction of the Atari 2600 two decades ago. But I hate video games. Hate 'em!! I have no patience for them. They drive me nuts. And I can't understand how someone can play them for hours on end without getting pissed off and throwing the controller through the television. It amazes me how dedicated some gamers are. I watch my kids playing their GameStation 4 or whatever it's called nowadays with their Guitar God and Hello 2 and Super Marvin Cousins, and I just don't see what the hype is all about. Maybe I'm just not hip and cool. Maybe I never was hip or cool. But I never liked video games. I suck at them. And, unlike a lot of gamers, I just can't understand the obsession.

And video game obsession is what I'm here to write about. In the fantastic documentary "The King Of Kong: A Fistfull of Quarters" we get to watch as two video game greats go head to head in an obsessive battle to be crowned the best. And, just like me, you don't have to enjoy video games to dig this entertaining flick. All you have to do is sit down, pop this flick into your dvd player, and enjoy one of the craziest, funniest, and at times saddest, documentaries to come out in many moons.

Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell are among the best players in the world at the game of Donkey Kong (hey, I've played that before....I sucked at it, too!). Billy is an arrogant, conniving, vindictive asshole who has the world in the palm of his hands. He's the perfect villian for any movie, mullet and all, except this isn't a scripted action film - this guy is real, his story is real. Billy is the world champion Donkey Kong player, a man with a drive to win at all costs in whatever he does. He doesn't mind stabbing people in the back, he doesn't care about whose toes he steps on, he only cares about being the best. Enter Steve Weibe, a down on his luck family man, your typical, average every day guy who just can't seem to get a break. His goal is to top Billy Mitchell's score in Donkey Kong. The obsession to be the best consumes both our hero and our villian, and we get to watch every step of the way.

Watch: as two men fight for supremacy.

Watch: as Billy manipulates his way into the record books.

Watch: as Steve fights to make his mark in the video gaming world.

Along the way we're introduced to many other fascinating people, including an elderly Q-Bert champion and a former Playboy centerfold-turned-lackey named Mr. Awesome. We meet Walter Day, a video game referee who takes his job very seriously. We meet Billy Mitchell's army, a group of people who cling onto Mitchell's nuts so hard that I'm surprised he can walk. We meet Weibe's family, who, against all odds, support him in his quest. This movie is filled with interesting people and it's pure bliss to watch this story unfold onscreen.

Steve challenges Billy to a heads-up, one-on-one competition, and as we anxiously await the showdown Billy conspires to make sure it doesn't happen. Billy even pulls a rabbit out of his hat to further screw with Steve by having some of his minions go to Weibe's home and trick Weibe's mother-in-law into letting them dissect his home arcade Donkey Kong machine. Billy is a despicable character, but fascinating to watch.

Props to the director Seth Gordon for making a film about video games this exciting and thrilling. I never would've guessed that this movie would be something I'd be excited about, but dammit, this is the ultimate real-life David and Goliath story. It works on every level (pun intended). The characters, if I can call them that, are intriguing to say the least, and the world of arcade gaming is filled with many sleazeballs. Who would've guessed that video game geeks could be so conniving?? SO EVIL?? I love it!

The soundtrack is incredible, as the filmmakers chose some classic hits like "Eye of The Tiger" and "Obsession" and made them fit wonderfully into the film.

Everything about this movie works. It is one of the best documentaries out there right now, so this one comes highly recommended. Whether you're a fan of games or not, this movie will keep you entertained, it will make you laugh, and it will tug at your heart strings. Trust me, this is one for the books. Check it out!
