Review Summary

Wow! "The Haunting of Rebecca Verlaine" really delivers on the goods, and that is really saying something. Tense, scary, and just bloody enough to make the gorehounds squeal with delight, "The Haunting of Rebecca Verlaine" should be on your "Must See" queue.

The Review

Yep, I'm back after a month long hiatus from Killer Film while I was out working on two films. What better way to make my return than by sharing with you, dear readers, my review of a flick that really impressed me, "The Haunting of Rebecca Verlaine".

Haven't heard of it? Me neither. When it popped up in my mailbox I thought "Oh, great...another crapfest. Not looking forward to this at all." So with lowered expectations of what I was about to sit through I popped it in the ol' DVD player and sat down for what I thought would be just another badly directed, badly acted, badly shot genre flick. What I got in return was an interesting, scary, and fun little flick that impressed me way more than I ever thought it would. Not that it is without its flaws, but for what it is it's pretty damn good. But more on that later.

The first few minutes of the movie really drew me in. Let's just say that it has a really impressive, really strong opening that immediately lets you know that the filmmakers aren't fucking around. From there on out the film follows the survivor of a brutal attack, the titular Rebecca, as she tries to put her life back together. Suffering from memory loss Rebecca goes to live with her aunt and uncle. And then things begin to get freaky.

There are some legitimately scary things that go on here. And I was surprised at how many times this movie made me jump. Very effective scares and effects do the job here, and overall helped sell the film better. Solid direction combined with the jump factor raised this one above your average indie horror flick.

But as I stated earlier, the film has its flaws. Namely, the acting. Jeezus! It was not good. Very wooden performances almost drag this piece down, but thanks to some clever writing and tense psychological scares the movie was salvaged. Some of the dialogue is laughable, but not to the point that you want to turn the movie off.....I don't know, maybe it adds to the charm of the flick.

Overall I'd recommend that you pick this one up on a dark, rainy night. Atmosphere is key here, and this movie has it in spades. It's not perfect by no means, but it is a fun movie with some genuine scares and good effects. Not a bad effort.
