Plot Outline

The French have the tense horror genre on lockdown. With "Ils" aka Them, you get the scariest, most atmospheric horror film othat has been released in a long time. Good stuff!

Review Summary

Here it is folks....the one for all you people who say there just isn't anything remotely scary out there anymore. This is a masterpiece of terror. This is a brilliant piece of filmmaking. Watch out for "THEM"!!

The Review

Holy Mary, mother of God, this is one badass, tension filled, edge of your seat, moody, atmospheric, creepy, unsettling, and brilliant film. Who knew that the French could deliver such an incredibly frightening motion picture? Not I, that's for sure. This was a slap upside the head, a grand gesture of genre superiority. "THEM (Ils)" is the movie that I have waited so long to see....the kick in the ass that I needed. It IS that good, gang.

Here's the thing: Do NOT, under any circumstances, let anyone tell you too much about this movie. Just the basics, folks, that's all you need, and that's all I'm going to give you. Just what you need to know going in, and nothing more. Do NOT read about this movie, do NOT seek out spoilers. Just go out, rent or buy it, and prepare for one of the best films in the horror/thriller genre that has ever been made.

Movies in this particular genre should unease you. They should make you wince. They should shock and scare you. Put your ass on the edge of the seat in fearful anticipation. "THEM" did that to me, and its a safe bet that it will do the same to you. It's an exercise in fear, and if it does one thing right it's TENSION...tension like a mo' fo'.

Lucas and Clementine spend what they hope to be a nice weekend together at their ideal country home. Then, what begins with omnious sounds in the night soon escalates into a terror filled fight for survival as their home is invaded by "THEM".

There you go. That's all you get from me. I ain't spoiling it, no sir, no way. You have to experience this for yourself.

Acting.....SUPERB. Direction and writing....INCREDIBLE. The shots are beautiful, the lighting just atmospheric enough to evoke certain feelings from you while viewing it. Careful use of music and sound effects up the tension to the point that I was breaking out into a sweat. This movie works on every single level imaginable. As the box art on the DVD states, and I agree with, this movie is as close to being perfect as any other film in recent memory.

Why? Why are you still reading this? I'm not giving away any more....you have to see it for yourself. Now get thee to your video store and pick this puppy up. Oh no! It's subtitled! Get over it. Look, the filmmakers wisely went for the more atmosphere/less dialogue approach, so don't sweat the fact you have to read it. If that is what will keep you from experiencing this film then you really should be ashamed of yourself. Just wait for the inevitable (and nowhere near as good) American remake then. Your loss. But trust me when I say that "THEM" is as good as it gets and you deserve a visit from "THEM" if you choose not to see this flick.

This, ladies and gents, is truly the very definition of a KILLER FILM.
