Review Summary
David Ayers knocks another one out of the park with his usual dirty side of California.
The Review
I'm a pretty big David Ayers fan. His movies, at least to me, feel like big budget different character but still feels like feature film versions of my favorite television series THE SHIELD.
Run on sentence.
All of the movies he's either written or written/directed take place in virtually the same parts of California. Be it during the LA riots in DARK BLUE, or modern times like TRAINING DAY the dude can write some dirty cop fiction.
He one ups it with STREET KINGS, which has enough good twists that don't keep you bangin' your head from their own stupidity. While I'm not a Reeves hater, I was VERY surprised that he handled the hell out of this role. Everyone did for that matter. My only real gripe was Whitaker. He pretty much plays the exact opposite of his character from THE SHIELD and tosses in some Denzel expressions ala TRAINING DAY. Which by no means did he do a bad job, but it was the only time I caught myself rolling my eyes.
My only small gripe would be the flow of the film. There are bits that start to bore you, but the action is good enough to keep you involved. I had just wished the slow bits weren't so ...
slow.
Other than that, the movie is fucking top notch. I hope this clears way for more Ayers directed films because the dude can do it, and do it fucking well.
Even though it's still in theaters, I'd recommend this a BUY when it hits dvd, especially if you love your un-washed (see: dirty) cop stories.
**FUN FACT!** Ayers directorial debut was a movie titled HARSH TIMES that only got a dvd release. It's a damn good movie, and worth seeking out. It's also one of the few movies that actually made me feel uncomfortable watching in some areas.
