The Review

My ears are still ringing from the screaming after seeing Slaughter House at 4pm today.

Seriously, this movie's got one up on a number of Pacino's, and that dude can yell. It induced a headache the likes I haven't had in a long time.

And I think I like it.

Sure, I'll bitch about it, but now sitting at my computer in the safe confines of my home, I'm feelin' okay. After twelve hours of running around at Texas Frightmare Weekend today, I'm beat. All I want is a roast beef sandwich and some serious sack time before doing it all again tomorrow.

I've had a lot of time to think about Slaughter House, and about how I'd write this review. Parrish Randall is a great guy, I was lucky enough to meet him last June at the last TFW. He's super smart, loves to talk, and is just about the nicest dude I've met since Jamie Sheridan Smith. He's also a talented actor, and a guy I've got big respect for.

Granted, a lot of this didn't occur to me until just now as I sat to write this. Of course, I knew I liked the guy and he was a dedicated man to his craft, and yeah, he's amazingly nice. It was only until his words at the Q&A sunk in ..just now..that I have a deep respect for the man and what he's done with Slaughter House.

Again, there's a lot ...LOT of screaming, yelling, and just loudness in the movie. The effects were good, and did the job very well. The acting was right on par, with big chops coming from Michelle Henderson and Parrish. Michelle got a lot of laughs in this movie, too. It was really great to see it with an audience, because I'm sure a lot of the effect of the film would have been lost to me had I'd only gotten a screener.

The thing that Parrish said that finally rang true to me tonight, as I sat down to write this, and not a second before, was this:

This IS true grindhouse.

Many will disagree. It doesn't LOOK like a 20 year old movie. They didn't use the 'film look' filter, and add crappy grain, and make it imitate a movie from the 70's/80's (GUILTY!).

To this I say, this IS a fucking grindhouse movie at it's purist. This is a grindhouse movie made today with todays NEW standards of what grindhouse should be. No name actors, grissly violence, done quick and on the super cheap, and revolves around sexual aggressors or sex in general.

Okay, so it's pretty much the exact same standards as twenty years ago. The difference here is that instead of imitating, the movie finds a voice of it's own and with that I commend it.

I'm sure people walked away thinking this movie was a stinker, at first bite I did too, but it was Parrish's words that finally sunk in me that made me realize what it truly was.

Wow. I think I learned something today. I hope anyone that stuck around for the Q&A got what I got today as well.

Come on down to Texas Frightmare Saturday and Sunday and stop by the PRP table and get your copy of Slaughter House and meet the good folks behind it.
