The Review
I was seven when I first viewed Robocop. I was always the un-cool kid in school that didn't get to see the R rated movies unless I was at a friends house. It sucked.
But for some reason my mom rented Robocop and told me I HAD to see it. That I'd love it.
She was right.
I don't think she knew that it was originally the only film rated X for violence, though.
What grew from that viewing was and still stands as my favorite movie of all time. It's got it all, gratuitous violence, mayhem, special effects, ROBOTS FIGHTING ROBOTS, cop drama, and even a small breasticle flash in the co-ed locker room of the police station.
It also has one of the best villains to ever grace the silver screen: Kurtwood Smith's Clarence Boddicer. A rapist, arsonist, murdering psychopathic cop killer. He's everything you could ever want and never want to meet in a movie villain. His performance was amazing, and in my eyes has not been met by anyone in any role in terms of pure evil.
Peter Weller also gave a fantastic performance as the family man cop turned tin man with memory loss in our title character. Sadly, I hear (NOT CONFIRMED) that he will punch you if you mention Robocop around him.
So many pitfalls and terrible things happened during the making of this film, that I hope the people involved realize what an impact this movie has on people. Me especially.
There are so many things that are perfect within the movie, from the rampant violence, the sci/fi themes, to even a bum getting the what for from the sarge and letting out a heartfelt 'Aw, sarge..'.
For movie buffs or casual viewers alike, this is mandatory viewing.
And seriously, if you don't like this movie: Fuck you.
If you haven't seen this movie, GO BUY IT. There's about a dozen different releases of it on DVD. I own at least three. For optimum sound and picture quality, I would recommend the ROBOCOP TRILOGY (box set) version. It comes with the unrated/uncut/X version of the film and has a far superior quality in audio/video than the passable Criterion release. Plus, that box set is a meager $20 at most retail chains and comes with all three movies in the trilogy (dur!). While most fans are on the fence with part two, and downright hate part three, I'd suggest watching them all back to back. They work a thousand times better as a whole than separate movies.
