Joe Francis reviews Oz - The Complete Series

Written on 24/1/08 by Joe Francis

Plot Outline

Oz chronicles life inside an experimental cell block in the Oswald Maximum Security Correctional Facility: Level Four called Emerald City. Under unit manager Tim McManus and Warden Leo Glynn, the inmates in Em City all struggle to fulfill their own needs.

Review Summary

Being the first hour long drama on HBO, Oz does well and excels what you'd expect from the actors and character development.

The Review

There are certain television dramas I absolutely love. Up there for me is The Shield, The Sopranos, and Oz. I used catch this one every so often, but over Christmas I was given a $200 giftcard to Circuit City.

I bought all the seasons of this genius show.

Most people that I talk to about it start off with the usual 'Ain't that that gay show what dudes punt each other in the tookas?'.

It is. But it's so much more. Taken into context, it makes sense. Most of the characters within the universe of the show are in prison for life. The need their bitches, by golly. I honestly don't think there's a bad actor in the entire series. Even the first season didn't have the 'rough period' where it took time to get into the flow of it. Much like The Shield, they hit the ground running and didn't stop until the tank went empty.

The character development in this series is among the best I've ever seen in television as well, which is one of the main reasons it captured me. Weather it's a muslim minister turning to sheer brutality instead of peace or a one time lawyer turned prag taking a shit on the head nazi's face there's so many layers to it.

Since each season (except 4, at 16 episodes) is only eight episodes at an our each you'd think there'd be little room for really fleshing out stories, you'd be wrong. It's almost as if every three episodes is a mini-arc, while the whole series encompasses the main arc.

Much like many shows, or even seasons of shows, there isn't a dull episode in the run. Every episode has a point, a reason, and a need. Each one works on every level, and if you miss one you'll miss a lot.

Right now you can pick up each season for a mere $20 at Best Buy, and it's damn well worth it. At least pick up the first season to see if it's your cup of tea.
