Joe Francis reviews Holy Shit….Zombies!

I was first introduced to DSK Productions via the Troma forums, which is how I later came to work with indie special effects master Rickylee Leonard on my own horror movie. He’d worked on a short with them called Party Like Hell, and I wanted to see his stuff in action so I bought it.
It was pretty bad, and not funny at all. It also hit one of my pet peeves of using emo rock music through out.
The effects were excellent, though.
It’s nice to see that, while not in editing or camera work, the DSK crew has advanced their comedy. HSZ was one of the most entertainingly funny no budgets I’ve ever seen, and there’s literally something in there to offend everyone.
While the back and fourths between the actors were good fun, for a movie called HOLY SHIT….ZOMBIES! there weren’t nearly enough …well, zombies. You got around 4 through the movie, and then a battle with around 6 at the end.
I’m a comedy snob, and that’s no secret, and it’s very rare that I’ll laugh out loud at a movie while watching it by myself. I did here, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. While I’m pretty sure 80% of it was improv, it worked.
Now, if only Rick and crew could up the ante on the camera and edit, it would make it that much more entertaining. Through all the crap I’ve watched on a no/low budget level, I’ve gotten over laughing at poorly shot scenes or lack of coverage, and sadly this movie has both.
There’s also severe editing faults here, which as an editor myself, I’m a huge stickler on the momentum rule. Don’t include cuts of your actors/friends starting to walk, show them already walking. It works wonders.
In closing, I still had a good time watching HSZ despite it’s technical flaws, and advise picking it up from their website DSK Productions Dot Com , and I think they’re having some kind of sale, too…
Again, even if you’re not a fan of the horror/comedy genre, but you enjoy some fun improv, this is worth picking up.
