Donny Broussard Reviews - Freaks and Geeks

Written on 7/1/08 by Donny Broussard

Plot Outline

"Everything you remember from high school... that you choose to forget."

Review Summary

Like most television set in a high school environment the show tackles themes such as relationships, sex, drugs, and dealing with your parents. But what sets "Freaks and Geeks" apart from other shows is that it focuses on nerds, and heads instead of the jocks and cheerleaders.

The Review

"Judd Apatow" is on a roll, creating some of the most original content in Hollywood, but before he was comedy's golden boy he helped create a little show called "Freaks and Geeks." The show follows a group of misfits in 1980 Michigan as they battle the beast better known as high school.

I have to confess, I didn't watch the show during its run on the boob-tube, but I can say that the DVD set of the complete series will garner repeat viewings for years to come. I have never seen high school, or adolescent relationships portrayed so perfectly as they are on this show. Like most television set in a high school environment the show tackles themes such as relationships, sex, drugs, and dealing with your parents. But what sets "Freaks and Geeks" apart from other shows is that it focuses on nerds, and heads instead of the jocks and cheerleaders. This time the geeks aren't just the comic relief, and the heads inhabit more than just the background.

Lindsay Weir (Linda Cardellini) is a good girl gone bad. She has the brain of a nerd (and the grades to prove it), but instead of spending her time with the brainiacs she's hanging out with the bad crowd. Now don't get me wrong these are the people I hung out with in high school and most of the characters in this series were similar in character to people that I grew up with, so by bad I don't mean the scum of the Earth, just kids that don't meat the expectations of the masses. Lindsay's family loves her and her little brother Sam (a geek) played by John Francis Daley goes to her school as well, and it's through their eyes that we get to peak into the rich world these characters live in. Lindsay and her friends are the freaks, and Sam and his brethren are the geeks.

I loved reliving high school with this show, and I'm looking forward to reliving it over and over again. This is one of the best television shows that I have ever seen and it contains one of the most amazing casts delivering some of the most amazing dialogue ever written for the small screen. This was definitely a killer film (or is is films since it's a series?)!!!!
