The Review
I was really looking forward to seeing this flick. Getting to see Apatow and Sandler work together on a comedy seemed like a match made in movie heaven, but sadly I didn't enjoy the film as much as I thought I was going to. It wasn't a bad movie, it just didn't live up to my expectations. I was really hoping for a comedy that highlighted the comedy stylings of the people involved. Sandler and Apatow's writing, along with director, Dennis Dugan should have produced comedy gold, but what I got was a funny yet predictable flick with an ass-load of cameos.
The film follows the flamboyant Zohan a Mossad agent that eats terrorists for breakfast, kicks ass at hacky sack, and can catch a fish with his but cheeks. Only he doesn’t want to fight anymore, what he really wants is to be a hair stylist that makes people look “silky smooth.” So he fakes his death and heads to the U.S. to follow his dreams, falls in love, gets laid A LOT, and finds many new uses for hummus.
I enjoyed Sandler’s performance in this flick, and was excited to see that he let his usual comedy persona rest for a little while. Not once did he burst out in anger and shout at people. It was a nice break from the Sandler we all know and love. Emmanuelle Chriqui was sexy as hell as the titular Dalia and John Turturro, as always was extremely funny. The film at times reminded me of a Mel Brooks film, combining satire with politically incorrect banter.
I’ve been on a comedy kick lately, spending more time watching comedy flicks than any other genre, and maybe because of that I didn’t enjoy “Zohan”as much as I expected. I liked it enough, and there were many funny moments, but for me it just doesn’t compete with this creative teams previous work. "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" was a killer film that I don’t need to see more than once. I’m planning on checking it out again when it hits DVD. Maybe I’ll feel differently about it after a little time passes.
