The Review
I've been on an Judd Apatow kick lately, checking out all of his films/shows and besides "Zohan" I'm pretty impressed with his body of work. The guy is a work horse, he rocked television for a while, directs movies, makes comedy shorts, produces, writes. Overall I think the key to his success is the fact that he surrounds himself with extremely talented people, and there couldn't be a more perfect example than "Undeclared."
The series follows a group of friends that all live on the same floor and share rooms in a college dorm. They are on a journey of self discovery and slowly figuring that their lives will never be the same again. Jay Baruchel plays Steven Karp, a lanky nerd that looses his virginity his first night in the dorms and plans to become the man he never was in high school. Steven's roommates; the charming Lloyd (Charlie Hunnam), the uptight Ron (Seth Rogen), and the slightly odd Marshall (Timm Sharp) give him a hard time, but would do anything to preserve their friendship. And rounding out the cast are Carla Gallo as the neurotic Lizzie, and the super-sexy Monica Kenna as Rachel.
The stories are pretty grounded in reality and echoed my own college experiences. The writers also made sure to put as much sexual tension within the group as possible, making for interesting twists within the arch of the series. Steven is in love with Lizzie, but Lizzie won't dump her psychotic boyfriend Eric, brilliantly brought to life by Jason Segel. Marshall is in love with Rachel, only she has no clue and doesn't seem to notice him as anything more than a friend. Add in Steven's nerdy dad Hal (Loudon Wainwright III) who's going through a divorce, and square tongued DJ Perry (Jarrett Grode) and this show might be one of the most perfectly casted shows in the history of television.
I thoroughly enjoyed each and every episode, and was sad when I reached the last disc in the collection. I'm not sure why it is that the best shows on television always get canceled (Veronica Mars, Freaks & Geeks, My So-Called Life, Jerico, Moonlight) while the crap rises to the top, but I'm happy that DVD has made shows like "Undeclared" available.
I can't say enough great things about this series except buy it, because it's great, and was most definitely a killer series.
