Plot Outline
"A young woman takes a soul-searching journey across America to resolve her questions about love while encountering a series of offbeat characters along the way."
Review Summary
I'll admit that the only real reason I was interested in seeing this flick was because I have a small crush, okay a big crush on Natalie Portman.
The Review
I watch a lot of movies, and while many of them are decent films, very few of them are beautiful. Kar Wai Wong's "My Blueberry Nights" was both decent and beautiful. The film flirts with traditional narrative structure, but isn't afraid to tread uncommon ground.
Elizabeth (Norah Jones) is struggling with the fact that love isn't picture perfect, and finds solace in lonely cafe owner Jeremy (Jude Law). The two talk for hours night after night while Elizabeth eats mass quantities of blueberry pie (and looks cute doing so). Until one day Elizabeth decides to find her place within the vast landscapes of America. Along the way she meets quite a few colorful characters help her figure out exactly what is missing in her life.
I'll admit that the only real reason I was interested in seeing this flick was because I have a small crush, okay a big crush on Natalie Portman. Add to that the fact that the extremely sexy Rachel Weisz, as well as the beautiful Nora Jones are in the cast and I was all over this chick flick. Only the film played out like more of an art film than a date movie. Each scene ripe with vibrant colors that sometimes stole the scenes away from the actors. Also, director Wong's cutting style was a welcome relief from the attention deficit style we are subjected to on a daily basis.
All of the actors were equally strong, but David Strathairn gave a performance worthy of a standing ovation. His eyes displayed the torture and longing of someone that knows what it is like to truly loose someone. Portman was sexy as always, Weisz was breathtaking and Jones and Law were a perfect fit as the long distance couple afraid to admit their true feelings for one another.
If your looking for a date movie of the normal Hollywood variety this isn't the flick for you, but if a smart, beautifully designed film that isn't intimidated by tradition interests you pick this one up. Because "My Blueberry Nights" is a killer film.
