Review Summary
While the chemistry between McConaughey and Hudson wasn't as strong as it was in "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" they were still fun to watch.
The Review
I don't ask for much when it comes to romantic comedies. Give me some beautiful people, a few laughs, keep the crying down to a minimum, and pepper in a little nudity if possible. But romantic comedies that cross over into the action/adventure genre are even better because they pretty much guarantee that there won't be any crying. That's why a film like "Fool's Gold" is the perfect date movie for a guy that doesn't dig whinny romantic comedies as much as his significant other might.
The flick follows two treasure hunters, Finn and Tess played by Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. Tess has just divorced Finn who she thinks is immature and was planning to sell their boat so that she can use the cash to finish school. Only Finn sank the boat, but not before finding a clue pointing the way to a treasure that he and Tess have been searching for, and adventure ensues.
While the chemistry between McConaughey and Hudson wasn't as strong as it was in "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" they were still fun to watch. Kate looks great in a bikini and McConaughey goes without a shirt for most of the movie which I'm sure will make the ladies happy. I would have enjoyed the film much more if action would have been turned up a notch, hell I would have enjoyed a little more romance as well. It's almost as if the filmmakers tried to put too much into the flick instead of just relying on good old fashioned action and the chemistry of the two leads.
I enjoyed director Andy Tennant's "Hitch" much more than I did this one, but that's not to say I was completely disappointed. "Fool's Gold" was a flick that tried to be more than the sum of its parts, and in the end that hurt the final flick. But it was better than watching a boring cry flick, and was almost a killer film.
