Plot Outline

"This man will bring order to the universe...or not."

Review Summary

Ryan Reynolds is brilliant in this role, os brilliant in fact that I watched the flick a second time just a few short hours after my first viewing and it was still awesome.

The Review

I was a Ryan Reynolds fan going into “Chaos Theory,” and now I’m a fan of director Marcos Siega. After checking out his IMDB page and seeing that he has directed episodes of some of my favorite television shows only heightened my interest in Mr. Siega as a director to watch.

“Chaos Theory” is about an obsessive efficiency expert paying his dues on the lecture circuit when his life of order is instantly changed by the events of one night. After almost accepting an invitation for a one night stand, Frank Allen (Ryan Reynolds) rushes home to be with his wife and daughter because of the guilt that he feels, and gets into an automobile accident with a pregnant woman. Because Frank is a stand up guy he drives the woman to the hospital, causing the hospital to think he is the father of the woman’s baby, which in turn causes his wife to think he’s cheating on her, which in turn causes him to get a DNA test to show that he is not the father of the baby, only he finds out something much worse that causes him to fall into a life of chaos.

Ryan Reynolds is brilliant in this role, so brilliant in fact that I watched the flick a second time just a few short hours after my first viewing and it was still awesome. Reynolds doesn’t play the same funny quick comeback guy that he has become known for, but instead plays it like a man whose life has just fallen apart and he doesn’t know how to put it back together. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely some funny moments in this flick, but for the most part the movie treads territory that isn’t even remotely funny. “Chaos Theory” is more like a romantic drama comedy (romantic dramedy) than a traditional romantic comedy.

This film has a wonderful cast including Emily Mortimer as Frank’s wife Susan, and scene stealer Stuart Townsend as Frank’s best friend. The cinematography is beautiful and Marcos Siega proves that he is a very competent director with a strong eye for visual for details. I really enjoyed this film, and I’m going to keep an eye out for Mr. Siega’s next film because “Chaos Theory” was positively a killer film.
