The Review
Californication
The opening scene of episode one has Hank Moody (David Duchovny) in a church asking God to cure him of his writers block when a smoking hot nun walks in and offers to give him a blow job. From that point on I knew this series was going to be something special, it takes balls to open a series like that. As the show played out I got so hooked into each and every frame that I watched the entire series in one sitting.
The story goes something like this, Hank Moody is a writer with three successful books behind him (one of them was even made into a movie), only he has writers block and can't seem to turn out another book. He hates the movie based on his book, wants his ex-girlfriend to take him back, totally adores his daughter, sleeps with almost every woman he comes into contact with, is writing a blog to make some coin until he clears up his writers block.
Each episode is ripe with nudity, colorful language, engaging characters, and brilliant writing. After the first episode I no longer looked at Duchovny as Fox Mulder, he was and is Hank Moody, the introspective sex-starved writer with a drinking problem and a car that smells like pussy. The rest of the cast is also amazing. Evan Handler is perfect as the quirky Charlie Runkle (Hank's agent), Pamela Adlon (amazing ass) is funny and sexy as Charlie's wife. Madeleine Martin is also a stand out as Becca Moody, Hank's rocker daughter. And I can't forget the extremely hot Rachel Miner as Charlie's secretary.
Also peppered throughout the flick are great music references. For example all of Moody's books are named after Slayer albums (South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss, God Hates Us All), and his daughter's band plays classics such as, "Only Women Bleed." Add to the killer music references awesome dialogue like; "You can have the ass tonight," and my personal favorite "You smell like pussy."
I can't wait for Season 2 to rock the DVD shelves because "Californication" is most definitely a killer film!
Video: The video was crisp and clear with no visible grain clouding the picture.
Audio: There are English 5.1, English Stereo, and Spanish audio tracks, but I only watched it with the 5.1 track which sounded fine. There's lots of cool music on this show and it all sounded great.
Special Features: There is a commentary track featureing David Duchovny, Tom Kapinos and Stephen Hopkins. It's pretty cool, but truth be told, I usually don't make it all the way through the commentary track, although with this one I stuck through till the end and wasn't disappointed.
Photo Gallery: This feature was kinda lame. Besides the fact that galleries are pretty boring, this one didn't have many photos in it.
Bio: Each of the main characters has a bio page. Not a bad feature, but once you've used IMDB this is kinda useless.
Bonus: Episodes of other shows like Dexter, and The Tudors.
