Best teen flick of the 80's?

Written on 20/11/07 by Joe Francis

Plot Outline

"The friendship of a group of young friends struggling with teen sex, drugs, and work is jeopardized... "

Review Summary

Gary, Rick, and David are determined to get laid- even if it means going toe to toe with a hilarious array of high strung hookers, naughty nymphomaniacs and naive high school girls. But when Gary falls for the girl of his dreams - only to find out she's become Rick's latest conquest - he soon discovers that having sex doesn't just mean losing his virginity, it may mean losing his innocence...forever.

The Review

I'll get this out of the way right off the bat. Sure the movie's over twenty years old and a true classic by all means. The tragedy here is that it's also the most underrated 80's teen flick since it was obviously out-shined by the likes of any given John Hughes movie that was out at the time.
This is also a very tough movie, in fact it's as tough now as it was all those years ago. Tackling, even now, touchy subjects such as teen sex, drugs, and abortion.

It tells the tale of Gary and his cohorts, Rick and David (The Big Apple) trying their best to get laid, even by ways of cocaine sweetener and 'crispy chips'. Gary is your typical every guy that's wanting...nay, NEEDING to lose his virginity. Rick is the 'cool guy/laides man' type, leaving David as the fatso yet cool guy that can still apparently get laid before our man Gary.

Our heroes start out in the local burger hut picking up a trio of babes with the promise of a killer party and drugs (read: sweetener). This of course, culminates to a great gag of a scene ending with David feeling up Gary's mom. After this we segue into a very Porkys inspired scene with our resident nerd Victor taking in a peep show into the girls shower, then being ridiculed by the rest of the class after getting busted.
For some reason this leads us into the guys having a boner contest, with Victor being the...well..victor.

Finally, we get to the meat of the movie. Gary finds his dream woman, as proven by the Reo Speedwagon song in the background. Big Gar pulls up like a nerdy white knight and offers her a ride to school throwing down a bevy of terrible lines that even an 11th grader should be ashamed of.
It was all for naught anyway, since she was already getting down with Rick, leaving Gary to pine for his lady lost. Through his pining, he and the other two still find the time to figure out alternate ways of getting laid. This ranges from crab infested hookers, neighborhood nymphos, and other equally horny classmates.

For those who haven't seen this amazing movie, I won't spoil anything further. I will, however, let you know that this has one hell of a gut wrenching ending. This also brings up another interesting point as to why I think this is one of the best teen sex films ever committed to celluloid. It's fucking HONEST. It's no holds barred look at teenage sex and the consequences therein touches points that other films of the era wouldn't dare..or weren't original enough to talk about.

Of course this review wouldn't be complete if I didn't touch on the soundtrack. Like the movie, it's one of the best. Of course if they include any Cars tracks, I'm game. This one goes the full nine by including classic tracks from REO Speedwagon, Journey, U2, The Police, Devo, and the eternal Quincy Jones. Good luck finding it, though, since it's been out of print on CD for some years.

Again, this is an older movie, but unseen by many. If you haven't seen this one yet, pick it up on dvd TODAY. It's a bare bones dvd, with just a trailer, but it's worth it for the movie alone. A timeless classic that won't leave you anytime soon after the first viewing.
