Welcome to New Release Tuesday for July 8th! I think this is one of July’s more promising weeks with a ton of new releases worth checking out. Hope you have some cash saved up!
Batman – Gotham Knight
Remember the “AniMatrix”? A series of short animated films based on various elements and ideas from the “Matrix”? Well, here’s a Batman take on that idea with six stories from different anime directors and writers that offers some thematic ideas from “Batman Begins”, which leads into “The Dark Knight”. It’s pretty cool and read my review here today. Also, on Blu Ray.
Extras:
-audio commentary
-“Wonder Woman” preview
-Two documentaries
Batman Begins Limited Edition Blu Ray
Yes! Finally, “Begins” on 1080p! There’s also just a standard release, but this one comes with a ton of goodies like lobby cards, a free ticket to see “The Dark Knight”, and other stuff. Look for it at Best buy which are offering a cool lithograph of The Joker!
Extras:
-same extras as the two disc DVD released a few years ago
-IMAX Dark Knight prologue
The Ruins
Here’s the unrated cut of the pretty popular horror film. It’s a decent film, but I just didn’t get why certain horror websites just loved the film. Read my review here at Killer Film, to see a more thorough review of this. Also on Blu Ray.
Extras:
-audio commentary
-additional scenes
-Three featurettes
The Mummy (Universal Legacy Series, 1932)
** DVD PICK OF THE WEEK** Universal has released these monster film numerous times, but this is the definitive edition to own. It’s a stacked set, much like “Dracula” and “Frankenstein”, so expect some new extras as well as the entire previous edition’s being ported over. A must own. I just hope they re-mastered the picture quality, as “The Mummy” was in need of a newer restoration.
Extras:
-2 audio commentaries
-Jack Pierce documentary
-2 retrospective looks at the film
The Mummy (Deluxe Edition, 1999)
Again? Yeah, another DVD release of the Stephen Sommers film. Seriously the only reason to own this is on Blu Ray, which streets today too, but TBS and TNT play the film every other week, so I don’t know why you’d want it, but here it is again.
Extras:
-3 audio commentaries
-“Mummy 3” preview
-digital copy
-ton of featurettes
The Mummy Returns (Deluxe Edition)
To capitalize on “The Mummy 3”, Uni is releasing all of he “Mummy” films. Again, why you need another new edition of the bad sequel is anyone’s guess. I disliked it when it came out and I still dislike the film. Still, in my book, features some of the worst CG ILM has ever done.
Extras:
-audio commentary
-digital copy
-ton of featurettes
Stop-Loss
Never saw it but heard mixed reviews, but it probably was another victim of the public’s disinterest in anything war related. Some soldiers were promised to go home, but were pulled back to go for another campaign. Directed by the “Boys Don’t Cry” director.
Extras:
-audio commentary
-2 featurettes
Superhero Movie
It’s bad bit not as bad as other spoofs, but c’mon, I hate these “(insert title) Movie”. Look for “Disaster Movie” soon. Gag!
Van Helsing (Deluxe Edition)
I understand why Universal is re-releasing the “Mummy” films, but “Van Helsing”? There’s no tie-in as no mummy ever visited this film. Avoid.
Extras:
-all ported over from the previous special edition
X-Files Revelations
This set contains a handful of episodes that tie-in to the new film, “X-Files: I Want to Believe”, but if you own the season sets, there’s no point. Cool idea for the rest of us who don’t have them, as it also contains a free ticket to see the new movie.
That’s the major bulk of the releases this week and boy, are we gonna be poor. Come back next week and look for some reviews of these films too, only at Killer Film!!!
