Welcome to another New Release Tuesday! The final week in June boats some good titles and don’t forget about Deep Discount’s 20% Off Sale which now ends June 29th (see previous editions of New Release Tuesday for more info)!
10, 000 B.C.
This film is awful. I usually enjoy Emmerich’s films on a brain-dead level, but this one didn’t sit to well with me. I felt it was cheesy, rushed, and ultimately a wasted opportunity for a cool flick. Read my more thorough review here at Killer Film. Also on Blu Ray.
Extra:
-unfinished visual effects featurette
Charlie Bartlett
Here was a film that split reviewers down the middle. I haven’t seen it but the idea seemed fun and it features Robert Downey Jr. as a principal (wish we had him as ours).
Extras:
-3 audio commentaries
-deleted scenes
Futurama: Beast with a Billion Backs
I love “Futurama”. I find the show intelligent, funny, and constantly well-written, but their first film (“Bender’s Big Score”) suffered from “wow, it’s great to be back!” and I hope now that’s over, they can get cooking with some great sci-fi tales.
Extras:
-lost adventure
-audio commentary
-preview of next Futurama film
In Bruges
**DVD PICK OF THE WEEL** One of my personal favorites of 2008 thus far, this is a gritty, darkly humorous tale of assassins being bored in Bruges, Belgium. Colin Farrell impresses as does Brendan Gleeson, but it’s the writing that shines here.
Extras:
-deleted scenes
-4 featurettes
The Eye 3
More Japanese ghosts for those who care, but I don’t, despite Lions Gate Films pushing ads hard for this.
Extras:

Maid in Sweden
I don’t care about nothing else, except for that cover…well, okay it’s a Christina Lindberg film prior to her breakout cult hit, “Thriller aka They Call Her One Eye”. Still don’t know who she is? Just wait until mid-July, when I’ll debut issue 2 of Rediscovering, which will feature Miss Lindberg.
Persepolis
This is a wonderful animated film which was nominated for an Oscar but lost to “Ratatouille”. As much as I loved that film, this film transcends the cell animation to a level we haven’t seen in a while, proving to you thick skulled people, that 2-D animation is alive and well. I bet this is just gorgeous on Blu Ray.
Extras:
-audio commentary
-Cannes interviews
-featurettes
Raising Jeffrey Dahmer
This film just popped up on my radar. Serial killers have been the subject of many direct-to-DVD films, but the story here has caused me to seek it out. Instead of rehashing his exploits like “Dahmer” did a few years back, this one shows us Dahmer through the eyes of his parents. Cool.
Spiderwick Chronicles
I heard some good things about this, but after “Golden Compass”, I personally couldn’t sit through another family fantasy film. Call it lazy or call it fantasy-fatigue, but I just didn’t want to see it. Err, maybe it’s because I don’t like Freddie Highmore. Nonetheless, I never read the books, but they decked it out in a nice special edition. Also on Blu Ray.
Extras:
-audio commentaries
-tons of featurettes
-deleted scenes
Outside of some reissues, A&E TV shows, that’s it for this week and June. Be sure to come back next week for a special birthday edition of New Release Tuesday, in which we’ll cover some Criterions, “Batman: The Movie” on Blu Ray, “Vantage Point”, and some other titles. Well, whose birthday is Killer Film celebrating you ask? Me, your dedicated reviewer, Jon Peters. Hey, we better celebrate; I sat through “Love Guru” for you all. Hahahahahaha, ugh.
