Blowing Smoke - Welcome to Killer Film!

First I would like to welcome everyone to Killer Film. We have a lot in store for July such as features on the new Transformers toy line and movie; a Jaws retrospective, an interview with cult icon Lloyd Kaufman as well as many others toped off with some killer reviews.
It’s a great time to be launching a new site because this summer is one of the most jam-packed tent-pole seasons in years. We have giant robots, Bruce Willis, gore fests, Harry Potter and much more. I can’t think of a better way to get out of the heat.
I remember a time when going to the movies was 2nd only to baseball as America’s favorite pastime. When you could see two movies in a day and spend the night talking about the previews that you saw while formulating a plan for which movies were the ones to see next weekend. This summer reminds me of those summers from my youth. And a summer like this wouldn’t be complete without controversy.
Eli Roth is a filmmaker that pushes the limits with his films and has been able to make life a little easier for horror within the Hollywood mainstream. His new film Hostel 2 didn’t live up to the standards placed upon it by the studio system. A work-print was leaked onto the internet, which caused a negative buzz for the film, and it’s ticket sales on opening weekend were less than expected. When a film like Hostel 2 is successful it keeps the doors open for other R rated films, but when a film like Hostel 2 does poorly we get flooded with PG-13 crap in hopes to boost ticket sales by opening up the doors to a larger audience. So filmmakers like Roth, who are able to produce quality content, keep the R rating alive at the megaplex. So what I’m saying in a really longwinded fashion is that we need to go out and see these films before we are stuck with nothing more than a movie of the week with a little foul language. With that said there are plenty of PG-13 films coming out that I really want to see, but every now and then I want to see tits, ass, and blood fill up the screen. I don’t think films like Roth’s doing poorly at the box office spells death for the R rating, but I do think that showing support for adult content will keep it alive. So show Mr. Roth some love because the man truly loves to fill the screen with blood, and his films are always a good time.
Speaking of filmmakers that push the boundaries within their genre Dave Gebroe, director of the film Zombie Honeymoon talked with Killer Film about what’s on the horizon for him as well as offering up some insight on some of the themes behind his kick ass zombie love story.
So get out and see some movies this summer and come back here to Killer Film often and read about the ones that you haven’t seen.
Regards,
Donny Broussard
