Blowing Smoke #4

It’s that time of year again; time to take out the Halloween decorations, dust off the costume, crank up the spooky tunes, and pop your favorite horror flicks into the DVD player. Halloween is that time of year for horror fans to celebrate the dark side of life, and stay up all night watching fright flicks on a sugar-high. A time for ghost stories around a campfire, bobbing for apples, jack-o-lanterns, and haunted houses.
This is the time when horror films are supposed to dominate the box-office, but this year theatrical horror is scarce. On October 19th we get what just might be the rebirth of the vampire in David Slade ‘s “30 Days of Night,” then on October 26th “Saw 4” promises to bring the franchise’s signature brand of torture back to the silver screen. Also Michael Dougherty’s “Trick r’ Treat” might make it to the screen by Halloween, but at this time I can’t find a solid release date. Do yourself and the horror community a favor and catch these flicks in the theater, so that maybe the powers that be might take notice and give us more to choose from next year.
On the bright side we do have television! AMC’s “Monsterfest” offers up a smorgasbord of titles for the rabid horror fan, while TCM’s “Classic Horror Directors” will play selected films from directors like Jacques Tourneur, William Castle, Tod Browning, and Roger Corman. There’s nothing like late night horror on cable to satisfy a horror fan’s appetite.
Also on the site we are going to review every entry in the “Halloween” franchise as well as the Documentary “Halloween: 25 Years of Terror.” The staff will post their Halloween watch lists, and as always we will post new reviews everyday. So make sure to check back often for your horror fix.
