Battlestar Galactica: The Final Season

Written on 23/4/08
The final season of tvs all time greatest show started off with a bang, literally. The rag tag fleet is royally frakked as the cylons show up to do what they do best, kill humanity. But something is not quite right, Starbuck shows up out of nowhere in a brand new, dent free viper. Didn't she and said viper blow up last season? Is she a cylon? (we've been told absolutely not) Meanwhile as the fleet is being attacked, Starbucks widow, who is now himself a viper rookie, has been identified by a cylon raider as being one of the final five. This revelation that the remaining cylons, who are considered taboo by the other skinjobs, are with the humans causes a civil war to begin. Some cylons want to unify their people, while others are content with just wiping out humanity, final five or not. As the fleet licks their wounds and lowers yet again the count to 39,575 survivors, Col Tigh, Chief Tyrol, Presidential aid Tory Foster, and Samuel Anders ponder their new lives as cylons, and Admiral Adama must decide whether to believe Starbucks claim to have seen Earth, or throw her out the airlock. Luckily for her, he gives her the benefit of the doubt and her own ship to continue her independent search for earth. Lee "Apollo" Adama has left the military for good, taking on a position with the civilian government thanks to Tom Zarek, otherwise know as Richard Hatch, the original Apollo. Lee comes to discover via Zarek that things are not as simple as they look when it comes to Laura Roslins presidency, including one or two executive orders that give too much power to the executive branch, hint hint. The most recent episode featured Cally Tyrol, wife of the new cylon Chief Tyrol, discover that her husband is not only a skinjob, but that their child may very well be a freak of nature. While trying to kill both herself and her child, Tory shows up. What transpires is one of the darkest moments I have ever witnessed on tv. Tory offers to help Cally out of the launch tube, but instead takes the child, knocks Cally out, then launches her out of the airlock, without hesitation. The final scene of the episode features Admiral Adama silently consoling the chief. What these events have given us is just a preview of what to expect from the remaining 16 episodes of this final season. Few shows have managed to do what BSG has, end on its own terms. Four seasons, story completed, and not dragged out beyond its welcome. There is no doubt that they will find Earth. But what kind of world will they come to, and what time period will they arrive? The past? Future? No one really knows. My experience with the works of Ronald D Moore have assured me that everything will be tied nicely and that Battlestar Galactica will live on as one of, if not the greatest piece of scripted television ever made. SO SAY WE ALL!!!!
