Roy Scheider died today at the age of 75. My first exposure to his work was actually Jaws, part 2. Soon after I saw the original film, and tried to keep up with his work. I was one of those obsessed film geeks, always wanting to see what his next film was. Being a child of the 80s, of course I was a huge fan of 2010 and Blue Thunder. And being a huge sci fi fan, I wanted to know every aspect of his own TV series, Seaquest DSV. Although the show started off well, not even Roy could keep the sub from sinking, and luckily he jumped ship before it hit the ocean floor. In the last few years I finally watched "The French Connection" in its entirety. Gene Hackman is always given props for his performance, but without Roy, the film would have never worked. Roy Scheider was one of the greats. Even though he never quite made it to the top, to me and other film geeks like me, he'll always be the man that made that son of a bitch smile!
